This Tuesday (17th June), sees the return of the Car Treasure Hunt.

Starting with an hour’s worth of staggered starts from 6:30pm from the Football Club West End Ground, Somersham’s drivers and their passengers are invited to take part in a treasure hunt that will see them tour the area competing for the Claire Kirby Memorial Trophy.

Adults: £3.00, Children £1.00 entry (which includes some light refreshments).

The winners will be announced, and the trophy presented, at 9:30pm.

There’s also a prize for the Best Team Fancy Dress in this year’s Carnival ‘Commonwealth’ theme.

Last year’s winners were ‘Buckets and Spades’ (Anne and Clive Desborough, and Lynn and Derek Martin), and ‘The Somersham Snorklers’ won best Fancy Dress (pictured).

What’s On: Carnival Week and Carnival Day 2013

The 2013 Somersham Carnival Week begins this Saturday (15th) and runs through until next Sunday (23rd), but what’s on?

We have a full and varied programme this year, with the underlying theme of ‘Beside the Seaside’.

Here’s what’s scheduled throughout the week*.

During Carnival Week (15th-23rd June)

On Carnival Day (22nd June)

9am: Stalls start to set up on the Norwood Playing Field

11.45am: Procession assembles on The Trundle. Walkers at the Millennium Pavilion Gate (all welcome but children must be accompanied by a responsible adult). Floats at the north end of The Trundle. Vintage vehicles at the Millennium Pavilion car park (please go via Feoffees Road).

12 noon: Judging for Best Decorated Float (Club/Pub, school, and independent), and Best Walking Group.

12 noon: Stalls open. Beach Bar Beer Tent opens.

12.15pm: Procession starts from The Trundle

12.30pm: St Ives Rhythm & Blues Band begin (in the Busker’s Marquee).

12.30pm: Video Games Tournament starts. Video Games Arcade opens (in the Scout Hut).

1pm: Pidley Male Voice Choir begin (next to the Pimms Tent!)

1pm: Somersham Town Band begin (in Victory Hall Garden)

1.30pm: Fancy Dress Competition in the theme ‘Beside the Seaside’ (in the Arena).

1.45pm: Stella Hensley & Chris Newman (on the Music Stage)

2pm: Punch & Judy Show (in the Arena)

2pm: Baby Competition (under 12mths – with a parent!) (in the Arena)

2.30pm: Somersham Singers (in Victory Hall Garden)

2.30pm: Charity Haircut

2.45pm: Greyhound Friends (in the Arena)

4.15pm: Tug-of-War Contest (in the Arena). Teams should register beforehand at the Information Tent.

4.30pm: Grand Prize Draw

7.30pm: Seaside Rock Concert with licensed bar (in Victory Hall)

Teas in Victory Hall kindly provided by Hope & Aid Direct.

Train rides will take place all around the field throughout the afternoon.

*Although we’ll aim to stick to this schedule, the Carnival Committee reserve the right to make amendments where required.

With this year’s Carnival comes a themed Fancy Dress Competition.

Judged at 1.30pm in The Arena on Carnival Day (22nd June), judges will be looking for costumes adopting this year’s theme of ‘Beside the Seaside’.

Perhaps we’ll see Mermaids? Giant Shells? Walking Sandcastles? Victorian/Edwardian Bathers?

It’s time to get thinking!

What’s On: Somersham Carnival Day 2012

Somersham Carnival Day takes place this Saturday, 23rd June, starting with the Procession at 12.15pm.

The Carnival Day Schedule:

9:00amStalls can set up on the Parkhall playing field from 9am. Ready to open by 12 noon.

Tractor

11:45amVintage Vehicles, with streamers and flags, to assemble at Millennium Hall car park – please go via Feoffees Road to avoid the floats.

11:45amFloats to assemble at the North End of The Trundle. Fancy dress walkers and anyone carrying an Olympic-style torch (no real flames!) to assemble at Millennium Gate. All welcome (children must be accompanied by a responsible adult). Judging will take place at this time. Prizes for Best Decorated Float (Club, School and Independent) and for Best Walking Group.

12:15pmProcession leaves The Trundle heading for Parkhall Playing Field.

1:30pmFancy Dress Competition‘Going For Gold’ theme. Children and adults in the main arena.

2:00pmBaby Competition (under 12 months)

2:30pmHuntingdon Gymnastics Club display. Elite girls and boys – stars of the future.

3:45pmPresentation of trophies

4:00pmBalloon Race Release – £1 per balloon – prize for owner of balloon that has travelled the furthest by 17th July 2012 (the Olympics opening ceremony).

4:15pmTug of War Competition – teams should register at the Carnival Information Tent

4:45pmGrand Prize Draw

Attractions throughout Carnival Day include: Classic cars, Bouncy castle, Fun Fair side shows, Refreshments in Victory Hall (kindly organised by Mary’s Tea Rooms), Pimms Stall, Craft Stalls and Charity Stalls. The Beer Tent opens at 12 noon and closes at 5:30pm.

Live music will be provided at regular intervals on Parkhall Playing Field from Pidley Male Voice ChoirSomersham Town Band, St Ives Rhythm & Blues band, Dark Surrender and Ain’t Misbehavin.

The Carnival Committee reserves the right to amend the line-up where appropriate and at short notice.
 

Carnival Week continues…

Don’t forget though, that Carnival Day is not the end of Somersham Carnival Week – Sunday 24th sees the annual Family Cycle Ride and the 5-a-side Football Tournament take place.
