Community Games and Activities at this year’s Somersham Carnival

The first of this year’s Carnival events has been announced, giving you the chance to have a go at beach games at Somersham Nature Reserve.

On Saturday 15th June, DASH sports coaches and volunteers will be organising beach games suitable for all ages including Volleyball, Rounders, Ultimate Frisbee, Cricket, Frisbee Golf, and Tchoukball, alongside a Swingball tournament and Fishing Line Cast competition.

The event will also include the more gentler games of hoops, bat and ball, beanbags and other games for all ages.

The event begins at 12 noon and runs until 5pm at the Dog Field behind Somersham Lake. It’s free entry for all. A BBQ will be available from 12 noon, and cold drinks and refreshments will also be available. There will also be a raffle.

Events for little-ones

Wildplay – wild-life discovery sessions will be available at the Nature Reserve for young children. These are being arranged by the Children’s Centre – please book places with Rachel and Louise on 01487 840225.

Events for dogs

The hounds of Somersham won’t be missing out either as they also get their own games – including a Flyball competition, a Dog Agility Course, and Obedience Training. There will also be a dog walk organised by Big Walkies.

So, whoever you are – come and join your fellow Somersham residents for an afternoon of outdoor fun activities. Don’t forget to bring your own deck chairs, blankets, suncream, sun hats and trainers!

Access to The Dog Field behind Somersham Lake for wheelchair and pushchair users can be found via Springfield Road and Station Approach (subject to ground conditions).

Starting from 8am and lasting until 4pm, you can join Ed and a host of other sports and fitness coaches in taster sessions, costing just £1 per sport or £2.50 for a day ticket to access all sports (family discounts available).

There’s also a 2km Family Fun Run with medals for winners in each age group – race numbers available in Somersham schools or the library (or contact Ed Procter on 01487 841021).

Sporting champions will also be available to share the secrets of their success.

Plus, for £1 you can create your own Olympic-style torch (no real flames though!) for you to use in the Carnival Day Parade on 23rd June. Crafts are kindly organised by the First Step Playgroup in the Scout Hut.
