2014 Country Craft Competition Categories announced

The categories for this year’s Country Craft Competition have been announced – and they have a Commonwealth themed twist.

Can your chutney woo the judges? Are you a photography aficionado? Are your Roses worthy of a medal? And will your Tin Foil Crown with Jewels look like something from a Tiffany and Co. collection?

Well, now’s the time to start planning what you’ll be making for this year’s Country Craft Competition, which will take place on Sunday 15th June 2014, at The Victory Hall, Somersham.

Here’s this year’s categories:

A: Cookery

  • 1. Any Flatbread
  • 2. Commonwealth Curry
  • 3. Jar of Chutney/Pickles/Sauce
  • 4. Jar of Jam/Marmalade/Curds
  • 5. Chocolate Cake (3 eggs, 7″ tin)
  • 6. Five flag decorated cup cakes (under 16s only)
  • 7. Commonwealth decorated Gingerbread (under 16s only) – download a Gingerbread recipe (PDF/54Kb)
  • 8. Flapjack
  • 9. Fruit Dessert
  • 10. Homebrew (class may be divided if sufficient entries)

B: Floral

  • 11. Three Identical Roses (home grown)
  • 12. Tropical display
  • 13. Fragrant posy
  • 14. Grow your own cress in a Quirky Commonwealth Container (under 16s only)

C: Handicraft

  • 15. Commonwealth Collage
  • 16. Commonwealth themed piece of Art
  • 17. Tribal Headdress or Mask
  • 18. Doll in Handmade National Dress
  • 19. Photograph: Local Architecture
  • 20. Open Class

D: Children (under 16s)

  • 21. Colouring 3-6yrs (picture in programme)
  • 22. Colouring 7-11yrs (picture in programme)
  • 23. Aboriginal painting (any medium)
  • 24. Tin Foil Crown with Jewels
  • 25. Handmade piece of Jewellery
  • 26. Handmade Flag
  • 27. Commonwealth Games Poem
  • 28. Photograph – Fruit Theme
  • 29. Open Class.

Registration of entries takes place between 9:30 and 11:30am on 15th June.

Adult entry fee is 50p per item, and the Child entry fee is 25p per item. You can enter more than one item per category, and you’re welcome to provide a short description of your entry.

Entries to all categories should be recently made items at home or at school/clubs, and not have previously been exhibited at the Carnival. Entry forms can be obtained from the Library, and we’d be grateful if you could complete these before arriving.

Viewing of Exhibits opens at 2pm, with the presentation of prizes at 3:30pm. Door fee is 50p per adult, 25p per child.

Refreshments are kindly provided by Parkhall Playgroup between 2-4pm.

The Country Craft Competition Judges are independent of the Carnival Committee.

Somersham shows its crafty side


Sunday saw The Victory Hall as the venue for the Country Craft Competition, seeing the finest creative minds displaying their work.

With entrants bringing in handmade items including photographs, cakes, and picnic boxes, many incorporating the ‘Beside The Seaside’ 2013 Carnival theme.

Following her Crowning Ceremony, Princess Jessica Stancombe performed her first official duties by awarding the winners, which included:

  • Best in Cookery – Elizabeth Reid, for a Beach Picnic Box
  • Best in Floral – Fiona Keene, for a Beach Wedding Posy
  • Best Handicraft – Madeline Anderson, for her Embroidery
  • Best Photography – Viv Brickett, with a seaside theme
  • Best Children’s Handicraft – Emma Phipps, for a Dream Ice-Cream Cone
  • Best Overall (Adult) – Elizabeth Reid, for a Beach Picnic Box
  • Best Overall (Child) – Bethan and Holly Goode-Jones, for their five Seaside Decorated Cakes

The categories for this year’s ‘Country Crafts’ competition have been announced.

Many categories follow this year’s ‘Beside The Seaside‘ theme.

A: Cookery

  1. Six bread rolls (any shape)
  2. One fishcake
  3. Chutney / Pickles / Sauce
  4. Jam / Marmalade / Curds
  5. Victoria Sandwich (3 eggs, 7″ tin, jam only)
  6. Five seaside decorated cup cakes
  7. Five Macaroons (any colour)
  8. Homebrew (open class – may be divided if sufficient entries)
  9. Beach Picnic Box (five items)
  10. Five Decorated Cup Cakes (under 16s only)

B: Floral

  1. An Arrangement of Grasses

D: Children (under 16s)

  6. Handmade Piece of Jewellery
  7. Your Dream Ice Cream Cone (non-edible, any media)
  8. Photograph – Seaside Theme
  9. Open Class

Viewing of exhibits from 2pm. Presentation of prizes at 3:30pm. Door fee – Adults 50p, Children 25p, under 3’s free. Refreshments 2-4pm kindly provided by Parkhall Playgroup.

Feel free to enter more than one item per category.

There will be photos of the winners at the end of the presentation (which we hope to add to this website). Please collect your exhibits after the presentation.

Thirty-one Country Craft categories have now been announced – giving you plenty of time to start getting creative across cookery, handicraft and floral crafts, as well as categories for the under 16’s.

The Country Craft event will take place at The Village Hall, Somersham on Sunday 17th June.

Many of the categories are inspired by this year’s theme of ‘Going For Gold’ – so now’s the time to put your (golden) thinking cap on!

How to enter

You should bring your entry (or entries) and completed registration form to the Village Hall from 9:30-11:30 on 17th June. Entry forms can be obtained from Somersham Library. There is a small entry of 50p for adults, 25p for children per item.

Viewing and Prizes

Public viewing starts at 2pm. This is then followed by a presentation of prizes for each category from 3:30pm – including photographs of each winner.

The judges are independent of the Carnival Committee. There is a door fee of 50p (adult), 25p (children), and the under 3yrs go free.

Refreshments will be available from 2-4pm and are kindly provided by Parkhall Playgroup.
