Today sees the start of Somersham 2014 Carnival, with its Commonwealth Theme.
Community Commonwealth Games
Starting at 12 noon and finishing at approximately 5pm, at Victory Hall and Norwood Playing Field, will be a range of taster sports for all to come and try.
You can try a sport for just £1, or you can take part all day for just £2.50. There’s also discounts for families. Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult.
Here’s a sample of the sports that will be on offer:
BMX and Skatepark Skills
Freestyle and Rock’n’ Roll Dancing
and more, including Fun Splash at Whitehall Swimming Pool (for those who book in advance – Somersham 840966).
If you’re worried that you’ll forget the start time, don’t fear – we have a Highland twist that will help you remember – The Lone Piper is joining us, who will open our Community Commonwealth Games at 12 noon.
As with all outdoor things, there’s an element of ‘weather permitting’ for some of these sporting activities.
And for those brainboxes amongst us, you and up to 5 team mates can take part in the Carnival Quiz at Victory Hall from 7:30pm. Quiz master Geoff Norman will be testing your knowledge across a wide range of subjects.
If you don’t yet have tickets, you can reserve them on Somersham 840034. You can bring your own drinks and food.
The evening will also see the presentation of the Marjorie McGee Trophy.
The tide may well have gone out centuries ago, but with Somersham Carnival Week starting on 15th June, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy being ‘Beside The Seaside’ for a few days.
First up are the Community Beach Games and the Carnival Quiz, which take place on Saturday 15th June.
The Community Beach Games, in collaboration with Friends Of Somersham Nature Reserve, starts at 12 noon at Station Land Field (the ‘Dog Field’) behind Somersham Lake. It’s free entry!
There will be plenty of activities for children and adults – with DASH sports coaches and volunteers organising beach games including volleyball, frisbee, and Tchoukball amongst others. For young children there’s also a ‘Wildplay’ session to encourage wildlife discovery.
Dogs can also take part too – with dog agility course, obedience training, and a flyball competition, organised in association with Big Walkies.
BBQ from 12 noon, with cold drinks and refreshments on sale – bring your own chairs, blankets, suncream etc!
