Following the nominations and voting on the carnival theme at the AGM in September, we’re looking forward to seeing a great variety of uniforms in Somersham Carnival Week (8-16th June) and on Carnival Day 15th June 2019. We”ll be looking out for girls and boys dressed up in costumes from all the emergency services and armed forces past and present, and some of the less obvious careers for astronauts, scientists, jockeys, builders, chefs – there will be plenty of opportunity for role play and creative thinking – so get in touch and share your ideas for events and entertainments for the whole week!
Press Release –Monday 9th November 2015
Funded by the Community, For the Community
Somersham celebrated the unveiling of the new Community Defibrillator installed on the front of Tesco Express on the High Street on Sunday. The project was a joint venture by Somersham Football Club and Somersham / Pidley Community First Responders, due to growing recognition of their life-saving value in rural areas. The Football Club had been looking into the purchase of a Defibrillator machine to support the growing Youth and Senior clubs and also to allow it to be available for the wider community 24/7. Coach Ali McCormick explained “Due to the location of the club on the outskirts of the village, it was agreed that a more centralised location would benefit everyone. With the kind permission of Tesco, the heated cabinet housing the machine was installed on the front of their shop”.
To purchase the machine, a request was put to the Somersham Carnival Committee for a donation to this project. The Carnival committee collect funds and donations from the village during the entire Carnival week – from kid’s 5-a-side football, dog show, treasure hunt and bingo, to bucket collections during the parade. All profits go to a fund that the committee distribute to groups and charities around the area. The generous people of Somersham donated the majority of funds (£1250) towards the purchase of both the cabinet and machine. Wendy and David Brown of Fenton, raised the remaining balance with an ART Open Studies Event.
“After much planning, fundraising and vision – Somersham now has a village defibrillator which any of us could find ourselves using in an emergency to save a life in the future” Theresa Baird, Somersham Carnival Committee.
Access to the Defibrillator will be given to anyone who rings for an Ambulance and the operator decides the use of the machine is required. Defibrillators are easy to use with verbal instruction clearly given when opening the case using the code. First Responder Austen White says “Your action could save a life – you will improve the chances of survival of a patient in cardiac arrest from 5% (with CPR only) to 50% by using a defibrillator and the defibrillator will only function if it determines a need”.
PPP First Aid will be running a free resuscitation and “Use of Defibrillator” confidence course at the beginning of December at Somersham Town Football Club – dates and time slots will be advertised in the village and on the PPP Facebook site www.facebook.com/pppfirstaid.
We think you will agree Somersham Carnival 2015 was a great event enjoyed by many this year even if the weather was not so kind to us on Carnival Day.
